Several lighthouses on the Great Lakes reportedly are haunted. With more than 300 lighthouses and harbor lights on the Great Lakes, the odds of sharing space with a physically long-gone lighthouse keeper or one of his family members are pretty good — if you believe the stories.

Here are some of the more notable:

Seul Choix (pronounced Sis-shwa) Point Light House, Gulliver, Mich. — Gulliver Historical Society President Marilyn Fischer has to leave Labradors Marley and Shelby outside the Seul Choix Point Light House in the Upper Peninsula when she volunteers there. “They won’t go in. They stop at the door,” she said.

Phantom cigar smoke is a phenomenon because, supposedly, no one has smoked one inside. Joseph Willie Townsend, the keeper from 1902 until he died in 1910, had to enjoy his outside upon his wife’s request. “He’s showing everyone he can smoke anywhere he wants,” Fischer said. But she knows there are other presences also keeping her dogs at bay.

“Two women’s faces appeared in the mirror of the dresser upstairs. They were so clear you could see their wrinkles. They’ve appeared to five of us.” Also, don’t be surprised if a guide exclaims that chairs and forks have been moved … again.

White River Light Station, Whitehall, Mich. — Karen McDonnell, live-in curator, has never seen whatever it is that goes up the stairs next to her bedroom at the White River Light Station, because she doesn’t open her door. “I leave it alone. I respect it,” McDonnell said. “It only ascends the spiral stairs up to the light. I’ve never heard it descend.”

McDonnell also doesn’t have any answers to why a beacon that was in the light station’s pattern could be seen by sailors even though the light was disconnected. She does have a guess as to who is behind the haunting.

“I like to think it is Capt. William Robinson,” McDonnell said. According to her research, Robinson fought retirement as the light station keeper and died there in 1919 at age 87 as he was about to be forced into retirement.

Fairport Harbor Lighthouse and Marine Museum, Fairport Harbor, Ohio — Cat or animal lovers should check out the Fairport Harbor Lighthouse on Lake Erie. The ghost of a gray cat, one of many felines that kept the bedridden wife of Capt. Joseph Babcock company in the 1870s, is still seen and felt in the Babcocks’ living quarters. The haunting has been featured on Discovery Channel and Animal Planet.

Door County, Wis. — An alternative to traveling to these haunted lighthouses is to go to Wisconsin‘s Door County Peninsula. The Door County Maritime Museum’s “Ghosts! Haunted Lighthouses of the Great Lakes” exhibit talks about these lights and more at the museum’s Sturgeon Bay site.

The hauntings were carefully checked by curator John Moga and his researchers. “We found a lot of lore and legend, some more colorful than others, but what we were looking for was more than just hearsay. We looked for hauntings where there were witnesses,” Moga said.
